Internships – We are moving kids into internships quickly. We now have 10 placements and are moving to place sophomores and juniors into placements of their choice. Please touch base with your student on where they are with their readiness indicators and any support they may need. As a result, we will be changing student advisors this week to be in grade level groups. This will allow advisors to visit all advisees on-site. We are very excited to support your students through this process.
Career Inspire – We took all freshman to Junior Achievement’s Career Inspire on 10/22. Career Inspire offered 9th grade students the opportunity to learn about careers from industry representatives in time to ensure their high school course work aligns with career goals and better prepare themselves for life after high school graduation. For businesses, higher education, and apprenticeship programs, this is an opportunity to participate in building Eastern Iowa’s future workforce.
Showcase – Our first Learning Showcase was held on Wednesday this week. Students had the opportunity to share with our community around the questions of: Who am I as a Learner? Who am I as a Family Member? Who am I as a Friend? And Who am I as a Community Member? Thank you to those who came and made this an incredible event, we hope you enjoyed experiencing the talents of the young people you share with us! This will occur every quarter and build toward our end of year celebration. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.
Explanation of Grading – Please check your student’s grades! Below is a brief explanation of how grades are calculated in Infinite Campus.
Calculating Performance on Individual Standard
Student proficiency on individual standards will be determined based on the mean of their assessments (maximum of the top 3) in each standard. Students must complete 3 graded and/or assigned pieces of evidence within each standard, otherwise they will receive an incomplete on that standard. The teacher has the option to require fewer than 3 pieces of evidence, but then all pieces must be completed and the grade will be based on the mean of all of those assessments.
Calculating Overall Course Grade
The overall course grade is the average mark for each standard that is assessed in the grading period. [E=4 grade points (100%), P=3 grade points (87.5%), D=2 grade points (75%), I=1 grade point (62.5%), NE=no grade]
Second Grade Option
Since City View is a Competency-Based School, we encourage all students to continue to work towards higher-level mastery on the standards for their courses. Students will receive a grade for a course (that includes an identified set of standards) once the student has successfully demonstrated their competence in the required standards. At the conclusion of a semester, a student will receive a grade, or an I for incomplete, for each course. Students wishing to increase their grade for that course may continue to work on the needed standards in order to demonstrate their competence. Once a teacher deems the work as meeting the competency standards, the grade for that course will be adjusted to reflect the quality of the learning the student demonstrated.
Open Campus for 10th graders – We will begin offering 10th graders the opportunity for open lunch beginning next week. This opportunity is only for eligible juniors at this point. In order to qualify, students must meet the good standing requirements:
