Weekly Parent Communication
Good morning City View Families,
I hope your learners had a great first day! The City Vew team was excited to welcome back students! A few highlights from our first day:
School Board Director Jennifer Borcherding spoke to the students about the importance of college and career readiness and congratulated them for being part of City View.
School Board Director Marcy Roundtree spoke to the students about the importance of effort and making their own path.
Chief Academic Officer Karinne Tharaldson spoke to the students about the power of agency and finding their own path.
A few points of focus for our work moving forward:
Cell Phones – We are a phone free learning community. Please reinforce the importance of putting phones away during instructional time. Lunch is the only acceptable time to use phones. Next week we will be emphasizing the importance of this expectation. If phones are visible, they will be taken and returned at the end of the day by school staff.
Dress code. We are working to create a professional school environment. Given the number of visitors and public space we are located in, this is very important. Please remind you student of the following expectation:
City View is purposefully co-located in the heart of the Cedar Rapids business community at the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance. Students will interact daily with business and community leaders and are expected to be ready to engage with our community. Accordingly, professional dress is an expectation. During the first weeks of school, we will be developing the dress code with students. However, the following will not be permitted:
Clothing not covering the back, chest, stomach, bottom, and private areas.
Exposed undergarments.
Clothing with offensive or inappropriate language, images, or logos.
Hats, caps, and hoods worn inside the building.
Sunglasses worn inside the building unless prescribed by a doctor.
Slippers.
Creating a welcoming environment – City View’s theme is community. We define this as a group of people who chose to grow together. Growing together requires that we build a safe and respectful environment. Accordingly, we expect all students will treat each other and our staff with respect and kindness. Inappropriate language will not be tolerated. This is a non-negotiable expectation. Please reinforce this expectation this weekend.
A few reminders:
Next week, students will start City View Academy on B days, which are Monday, Wednesday, Friday of this first full week of classes. Students will begin preparing their portfolio, resume and personal statements by thinking about and taking action to answer the question, “Who am I?” This guiding question and these work products will be central to preparing them to apply for internships and the first City View exhibition night in October. Please ask them about this when they get home!
Computers – Please bring fully charged computers on a daily basis.
9th graders will receive their chromebooks on Monday. Please remind students that they need to bring their computers and chargers on a daily basis.
10th-11th graders need to bring their computers and chargers on Monday.
School runs from 7:50-2:50 PM.
If you have any transportation related questions, please contact Jessica Carter ([email protected]) and myself.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
